Do you find yourself fighting to keep your eyes open at your desk in the afternoon? Sounds like you’ve been struck by the afternoon slump!
And you’ll probably be pleased to hear that you’re not alone; according to research more than a third of Brits start to experience that dreaded drowsy feeling DAILY!
As a person who works more productively in the morning (and loves an afternoon nap), the afternoon slump can hit hard.
In all seriousness the afternoon slump can have a serious negative impact on our working lives if we don’t do our best to combat it, so here are a few of my favourite tips that keep me productive (and awake😂) during busy days.
1. Getting a good sleep (captain obvious over here)
It goes without saying that a restful night sleep has many benefits for our overall mood and performance. Running on lack of sleep can make our working day a lot harder than it needs to be, if only we dedicated enough time to our sleep rather than fighting the effects of tiredness. Try and make a conscious effort to unwind at the end of the day and get a good kip.
2. A Healthy lunch
Eating a nutritious, filling lunch is a great way to get those energy levels up to get you through the afternoon. Foods such as leafy greens, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats such as fish, nuts, and seeds are said to help fight the affects of fatigue. Try to avoid foods that will make you feel sluggish. (Chose your meal deal wisely…)
3. Fresh air
If you are at a desk for the majority of the day, try and get yourself out of the office for a quick walk on your lunch break. This is a simple, underrated way to get some fresh air, move your body and give your mind a minute to move away. This one is a gamechanger!
4. Work out your prime time
Think about when you feel most alert and schedule your tasks around that window, maybe you use 9am-11am to do the ‘this-makes-my-brain-hurt-tasks’, and then use the afternoon to do something a little less challenging. However, you work, make a plan!
