As the Senior Design Manager for a company based in London you will assist the preconstruction team to provide advice at tender stage, complete works assigned to you on projects and co-ordinate with other team members to progress design works through to RIBA Stages 1-7.
Reporting to head of department you will be tasked with leading the design team as well as working with external designers to make sure all designs are compliant to enable you to provide advice toward the active bid.
If you have exposure working for a main contractor and leading a team within the design function of the business this will be best suited for you. Exposure to the construction industry is a must as you will need to have experience with building regulations.
The Senior Design Manager role is also going to be someone that still likes to work hands on when required. Your skills as a designer will be used to pass on the other members of your team as well as be best positioned to provide knowledge to external teams, clients and stakeholders.

Duties & Responsibilities of the Senior Design Manager
- Manage the process of design to ensure full compliance with the business and client Design protocols. Report on all issues surrounding rejection of design and implement robust procedures to minimise this rejection as far as reasonably practicable.
- Overall management of the Design Team to ensure designs are issued in line with agreed programme and timescales. Develop design programmes that are effective for each project and allocate resource to complete this work to agreed deadlines.
- Liaise with the Design Manager to manage overall workload of In-house and External Designers to ensure compliance with all project timescales. Complete upward reporting of this information to the HoW
- Identification, development and subsequent management of Design risks to minimise risk to the business
- Responsibility for the production of Contractors Proposals at Tender stage in conjunction with the Bid Team
- Produce and negotiate the project specific designer agreements scope of works and the design management plan, ensuring they are agreed and fully understood by all parties
- Schedule possible section notices and their impact on the tender
- Produce and maintain an overall Design Programme for the team that details all secured and potential works. Ensure resource is managed within this programme to meet the future needs of the business
- Responsible for the employment of all resource with the Design Team, whether directly employed, sub-contract or external Design practices
- Responsibility for the development of a design preconstruction programme and feeding this into an overall Team Design Programme
- Overall responsibility for the sourcing and appointment of external consultants on projects
- Consider and identify potential problems, record for reference.
- Attend tender settlement meetings to give input, attend interview if required
- Produce information as required for Bid Submission
- Liaise with the HoW in selection of manufacturers on specific projects, with a view to Operational and Commercial restraints
- Continuously evaluate the Design supply chain. Implement a procedure to monitor performance. Hold regular reviews with.
- Identification of strategies during tender to increase success on tenders.
- Identify and Manage all Design Risks on all works undertaken by the business.
- Ensure the client remain at the forefront of new and latest technologies in respect of design solutions
