As a recruiter, the one question I get asked a great deal is does cultural fit really matter?
In my opinion, YES is the only answer I would give and I am sure that the clients and candidates who I have worked with over the years would agree with me.
Have you ever been rejected from a job and wondered why, when you have the experience required? It often comes down to your cultural fit within the team or company. It can be hard to be told this, but in reality would you want to work somewhere where you didn’t feel comfortable. We are all aware that we spend a great deal of our lives at work and often colleagues become our friends, we confide in them, ask for support and often enjoy fun times too (yes, I did say that people have fun at work)!
Every company culture and environment will vary and this can be influenced by many factors such as industry, size of company and management style. What is right for one isn’t always right for another! Every candidate is different too and will have preferences, for example they may prefer working in a relaxed environment or an open plan office. In my opinion it is crucial, in an interview, that the cultural fit is explored by both parties to ensure the opportunity is the correct one.
These are a few example questions which will determine the suitability of the candidate from the employer’s perspective. However, similar questions can be asked by the interviewee to find out about the company management style, environment etc.
- Describe the work environment or culture in which you are most productive and happy.
- What are the characteristics exhibited by the best boss you have ever had, or wish that you have had?
- What are the positive aspects of your current job and work environment, or the last position you held before coming to this interview?
- Describe the management style that will bring forth your best work and efforts.
- Describe what you believe are the most effective roles that a good manager plays in his or her relationship with reporting staff members.
- Do you have a best friend at work? How do you feel about becoming friends with your co-workers?
- What is your preferred work style? Do you prefer working alone or as part of a team? What percentage of your time would you allocate to each, given the choice?
- What are the top three expectations that you have of senior managers within an organisation where you will work successfully?
- How would your direct reports describe their relationship with you? What would they like to see you do more of, less of, start, and stop?
Getting the right cultural fit is the key to a successful future for both the parties which is why, at Kameo Recruitment, we understand the importance of placing candidates where they will excel and feel comfortable in their surroundings. In order to do this we visit our clients to gain an in-depth understanding of the company culture which allows us to find the right person for both the position and the company.
